BATON ROUGE – Reggie Travis scores three TDs to lead Southern University to a 51-36 win over the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Football team, here Saturday evening at A.W. Munford Stadium in Golden Lions first of four homecoming games.
On their second play of their opening drive Austin Howard connected with Reggie Travis from 79 yards out giving SU a 7-0 lead with 14:12 left in the first.
Kyle Walker tied the contest at 7-7 as he fell on the ball in the end zone with 6:36 to go in the first.
The Jaguars retook the lead on a 98-yard kickoff return by Danny Johnson with 6:20 left in the quarter.
A 61-yard reception by Aaron LaGrone from Benjamin Anderson to the SU four-yard line set up the acrobatic one-yard score by Anderson as he dove over to top to tie the game at 14-14 with 3:43 to go in the first.
Travis recorded his second TD of the evening as he scored from 11 yards out on a pass from Howard with 13:53 left in the second quarter. UAPB blocked the SU PAT attempt giving the Jaguars a 20-14 lead.
UAPB regained the lead on a nine-yard TD pass to C.J. Branch from Anderson with 8:43 left in the half, giving the Golden Lions a 21-20.
SU would go into the break with a 34-21 lead as Brian McCain scored o n a one-yard run and Samuel Altman on a 27-yard reception from Austin.
The Jaguars scored in one play on their second possession of the third quarter as Travis caught his third TD pass of the game from 41 yards out from Willie Quinn with 6:02 left in the third.
Greg Pittman increased the Jaguars lead to 44-21 on a 27-yard field goal at the 12:54 mark of the fourth quarter.
A Kevin Rucker 36-yard interception set up the Golden Lions next score as Anderson connected with Patrick Rowland from 25 yard out to cut the Jaguars lead to 44-28.
Danny Johnson set up the Jaguars final score of the game with a 60 yard interception return as Jarmarcus Jarvis scored from nine yards out, giving SU a 51-28 lead with 2:28 left in the game.
LaGrone recorded the Golden Lions final TD as he scored on a 12-yard run and Anderson converting on the two-point conversion for the 51-36 finale with 31 second left in the contest.
With the win, SU raises their record to 3-3 and 2-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while UAPB lowers their record to 1-4 and 0-3 in conference play.
LaGrone led the Golden Lions ground attack as he finished the contest with 39 yards on six carries with one TD, followed by Brian Handley with 36 yards on nine carries.
Anderson finished the contest with 289 yards passing as completed 18 passes in 41 attempts with two TD passes and one interception with his longest completion being for 61 yards.
Willie Young led the Golden Lion receivers as he finished the contest with six receptions for 85 yards, whereas LaGrone recorded four receptions for 95 yards.
Willie Duncan led the Golden Lions with 14 tackles (5 solos, 9 asst) and one forced fumble.
Lenard Tillery led the SU ground attack as he finished the contest with 85 yards rushing on 14 carries.
Howard in his third collegiate start as the Jaguar field general finished the contest with 230 yards passing as he completed 14 passes in 22 attempts with three TD passes and one interception.
Travis led the SU receiver with 156 yards on five receptions with three TDs and his longest reception being for 79 yards.
On defense SU had four players to finish with five tackles apiece.
