CIAA Fooball Players Of The Week Announced – Sept. 22

The CIAA announced its players of the week Tuesday.  They include:

Offensive Lineman
Justin Kee, Winston-Salem
(Jr, OL – Suffolk, VA, #52)

Justin Kee graded out as the top offensive lineman of the night for WSSU, as the Rams accumulated 408 yards of total offense in the 24-13 win over Tuskegee.

Offensive Back
Roderick Davenport, St. Augustine’s
(Jr, RB – Orangeburg, SC, #24)

Roderick Davenport gained a career-high 178 yards on 30 carries against Stillman. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry including a long gain of 33 yards. He also caught one pass for 16 yards.

Receiver of the Week
Lennworth Lennon, Virginia Union
(Sr, WR – Fort Lauderdale, FL, #3)

Lennon caught seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown, averaging 16.7 yards per reception in VUU’s win over Fayetteville State.

Quarterback
Trevon Bennett, Bowie St.
(Sr, QB – Upper Marlboro, MD, #9)

Bennett came off the Bulldogs bench early in the second quarter vs. Concord and had a career day, throwing for 349 yards on 24 of 50 passes and three touchdowns, mounting a tremendous comeback that fell just short in Bowie State’s 37-34 loss.

Defensive Lineman
Mike Bloomfield, Winston-Salem St.
(Jr, DL – Jacksonville, NC, #40)

Bloomfield helped the WSSU Rams hold Tuskegee to three second half points with four tackles (3 solo), two sacks, two and a half tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry, as the Rams defeated the Golden Tigers 24-13, running their record to 29 consecutive wins over HBCU’s.

Linebacker
Austin Jacques, Johnson C. Smith
(Jr, LB – Springdale, MD, #50)

Jacques stepped up his game this week with a game high 21 tackles, 14 of which were solo. He also had 3.5 tackles for a loss of 7 yards and added a pass interception in JCSU’s road loss to West Georgia.

Defensive Back
Curtis Pumphrey, Bowie St.
(Jr, DB – Laurel, MD, #7)

Pumphrey was Bowie State’s top defender in Saturday’s loss at Concord, leading both teams with 10 total tackles (6 solo) and one interception for 38 yards.

Rookie
Trey Johnson, Virginia St.
(Sr, RB – Richmond, Va., #19)

A tranfer from West Virginia University, Johnson rushed 14 times for 81 yards averaging 5.8 yards per carry to help lead VSU to its first win of the season.
