The MVSU Football team continued with Preseason Camp 2009 as they battled two of earth’s natural elements: heat and water. During the morning period, the team worked through individual and group drills as they continued to implement schemes and plays for the season.
In the afternoon, the showers gave the team a chance to work out in inclement conditions – a possibility when the current weather patters that are going in the southeastern United States.
“We are still teaching and learning,” said head coach Willie Totten. “We are getting better, but we must continue to dedicate ourselves to be the best if we are going to be successful this season.”
The team will only practice once on Friday as classes began at the university.  A scrimmage is set for 10 am Saturday, August 22 at Rice-Totten Stadium. The scrimmage will be the second for the camp as the team begins its transition to the week-to-week practice sessions.
The MVSU Delta Devils football team opens the 2009 campaign with a road trip to Arkansas State on September 5. The team’s first home game comes on September 19 against conference rival Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Volleyball Camp Journal
The volleyball team worked conditioning drills in their last practice before the university opens the academic year. Working on serve receptions along with defensive shifts, the Devilettes seem to be in step with the coaches’ expectations at this point.
“We are all working hard, from the players to the coaches to the staff,” said head coach Alyse Wells-Kilbert. “The newcomers are picking up the schemes while the returning players are pushing themselves and the first-year players.”  A highlight from camp came when two upperclassmen received preseason honors. Senior outside hitter Kantessa Bryant was named to the preseason all-conference second team while junior middle blocker Maura Moed was named preseason first team and preseason offensive player of the year. The Devilettes were picked to finish third in the Eastern Division, a spot the could bode well for the team.
“The preseason pick is a good measuring mark,” said Kilbert. “We know where people expect us to be, but it is up to us to decide where we want to finish.”  The MVSU Devilettes volleyball team opens the 2009 season with a road trip to Arkansas on August 28 to take on Central Baptist College and Philander Smith. The team’s first home matches come during the 2009 MVSU/Jessie Harris Classic September 25-26.

Soccer Camp Journal
The soccer team held their final preseason practice session this afternoon under first-year head coach Sonia Curvelo.
“The work we have put in with such a short time frame has been good,” said Curvelo. “This season is going to be like we all are first-year performers. But that is a good thing, because it gives us a chance to set our own standard on this program.”  The Devilettes begin their season with an August 28 contest at Jacksonville State. Soccer opens its home slate on September 13 against Troy.
