Quarterback Battle Underway in PVAMU Training Camp

prairie_view_logoPRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – With the second week of training camp underway, the Prairie View A&M Panther football team returned to the field on Tuesday afternoon for a spirited practice at Blackshear Field. After a series of drills, the quarterbacks took center stage as they had a strong showing in 7-on-7 passing drills.

Due to the departure of record-setting passer Mark Spivey, it’ll mark the first time since 2003 the Panthers will enter a season opener with a quarterback who hasn’t started a game for the Panthers previously. Throughout the spring, senior quarterback Jay Bluford and Western Kentucky transfer KJ Black battled for the top spot along with junior Andrew McGlory. Even though Bluford and Black separated from the pack in the spring, head coach Henry Frazier III and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Michael Bryant didn’t name a starter and preferred to let the competition play out in training camp.

“All three quarterbacks are getting better and progressing each day,” said Bryant. “We have several freshmen in camp and they’re also showing signs of progress.”

With the starting job up for grabs, everyday is important for the quarterbacks as the staff wants to name a starter soon. However, Bryant is taking it week-by-week before a decision is made.

“We’ve been here for a week and I want to make sure they’re comfortable with the offense at this point,” said Bryant. “As we move along in camp, I’m expecting them to make the right reads, know their checks and play fast.”

The Panthers return to the gridiron for another round of three-of-days on Wednesday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m.
