MEAC Football Weekly Honors – Week 5

meaclogo.jpg Senior quarterback Casey Hansen of Norfolk State University and Ronnie McCullough of Bethune-Cookman University were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Football Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Norfolk State teammates Jeremy Wicker and Jason Kressen earned Rookie and Offensive Lineman of the Week honors and Howard’s Dennis Wiehberg was named as the Special Team’s Player of the Week.

Hansen (QB, 6-5. 235, r-Sr., Noroco, Calif.) threw for a career-high 351 yards and four touchdowns on 19-of-27 pass attempts to lead the Spartans to their first 2-0 MEAC start since joining the conference in 1997. Hansen connected with six different receivers and threw touchdowns to three different players in the 50-20 win over the North Carolina A&T State Aggies.

McCullough (LB, 6-1, 230, Tampa, Fla.) collected a career-high 20 tackles, six solo, against Morgan State. McCullough also recorded two and a half tackles for a loss of 10 yards, a half of a sack for a four-yard loss and a pass break up.

Wicker (WR, 5-11, 180, Fr., Quantico, Va.) caught a career-high five passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns against the Aggies. He also posted a 26-yard kickoff return for a combined 198 all-purpose yard game day performance.

Kressen (OL, 6-3, 301, r-Sr., Suffolk, Va.) aided the Spartans to 532 total offensive yards in their win against the Aggies. The Spartans averaged 6.9 yards and held the ball for nearly 38 minutes of play. He graded out at 91-percent on his assignments and tallied two pancake blocks.

Wiehberg (P/PK, 5-10, 190, Berlin, Germany) gained the punting responsibilities after injuries and responded by averaging 38-yards per punt including two critical inside the 10-yard line boots. He also converted on all three of his extra point attempts and hit the game winning 28-yard field goal in overtime to secure the team’s first win of the season.

Other Top Performances:

Justin Castellat (NSU) recorded 3-for-3 field goals and was 5-for-6 on extra point attempts to help the Spartans defeat the Aggies.

Dwayne Delaney (MSU) helped pave the way for a Bear offense that churned out 180-yards on the ground. He graded out at 98-percent of his assignments and collected five pancake blocks.

Xavier Fowler (HOW) caught two passes for 85 yards including a 32-yard touchdown in the Bison’s first win of the season.

Jeremy Gilchrist (HAM) caught eight passes for 177 yards and one touchdown against the Hornets.

Rudie Hardie (HOW) collected 11 tackles, five solo, one and a half sacks and a quarterback hurry against the Rams.

Qier Hall (FAMU) finished the game with two punt returns for 103-yards including a 83-yard return for a touchdown in an 18-17 win over TSU.

Brian Johnson (HOW) completed 20-of-35 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns in a win over WSSU.

Justin Keable (BCU) boomed away six punts for 220 yards for an average of 36.7 yards against the Bears.

Kellen Kemp (DSU) helped the Hornets to 319 total offensive yards and graded out at 94-percent of his assignments to defeat the Hampton Pirates.

Carlos Rolle (FAMU) tallied nine tackles, three solo, and one for a loss of four yards in the Rattlers win over Tennessee State.

Michael Russell (HOW) graded out at 98-percent of his assignments and helped the Bison to 372 total offensive yards in their first win.

Chad Simpson (MSU) rushed for 98 yards on 30 attempts and caught one pass for 13 yards as the Bears defeated the Wildcats 33-9.

Philip Sylvester (FAMU) rushed for 131 yards in 25 carries and tallied three kickoff returns for 77 yards, with his longest being for 31 yards against Tennessee State. Sylvester was named the MVP of the 19th Annual Bank of America Florida Classic.

Vashon Winston (DSU) finished with 190 yards total offense including 131 passes and 59 yards rushing with three touchdowns against the Pirates.

Bryan Wilson (MSU) recorded six tackles (four solo), two tackles for a loss and a sack. He also forced a fumble and had a fumble recovery against the Wildcats.
