Southern University’s Roman Banks Named Finalist For Ben Jobe & Skip Prosser Awards

Southern University head basketball coach Roman Banks has been named a finalist for two postseason coaching awards; the Ben Jobe award and the Skip Prosser award.

The finalists for each award were announced on Monday.

The Ben Job Award, presented annually to the top minority coach at the division I level, is named after the HBCU basketball coaching legend who had coaching stints at Talladega College, South Carolina State, Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Southern University.

“His record at Southern was 209-141 and included four NCAA Tournament appearances. He also coached the Jaguars to one NIT appearance, five SIAC championships, 11 SWAC titles and two NAIA Tournament Championships. Perhaps his most memorable moment as a coach was Southern’s 93-78 win over Georgia Tech in the first round of the 1993 NCAA Tournament. It stands as one of the great upsets in the history of the event.”

The Skip Prosser award, named after the former Xavier University (OH) and Wake Forest head coach who passed in 2007, was established in 2008 and is awarded to coaches who’ve displayed moral integrity on and off the court.

Banks, completing his third season at Southern, led the Jaguars to a SWAC regular season championship with an overall record of 19-13.
