ALEXANDRIA, LA – The 2009 SWAC Tennis Championships came to a close on Sunday with the Jackson State women and Alcorn State men claiming the tournament titles.

The Lady Tigers pulled off a semifinals upset as they edged formerly undefeated Southern 4-3 to advance to the Championship match. In the finals, J-State got behind early after relinquishing the doubles point. However, Paulina Vargas won in three sets from her #1 singles position to score the first point for Jackson State. Britney Shy, Angela Rose, and Valentina Prado would all win their matches to secure the 4-2 victory for the Lady Tigers and the 2009 SWAC Women’s Tennis title.

Angela Rose, who went 3-0 from her #5 singles position for J-State, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Alcorn State breezed through Grambling State 4-0 in the semifinals round to reach the Championship match. The Braves jumped on Arkansas-Pine Bluff early in the finals, earning the doubles point in pairings one and three. The Loin’s Hugo Gomez won in three sets at the #1 singles slot to put the match at 2-1. However, the Braves won the next three matches at the two, three, and four singles position to win the match 4-1 and go home as the 2009 SWAC Men’s Tennis Champions.
