TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A shooting near FAMU’s Bragg Memorial Stadium left 12 people injured, including six children, Saturday night as the university celebrated its annual homecoming weekend, according to the Tallahassee Police Department.
Eleven people suffered gunshot wounds, while a 12th person was injured while fleeing the scene. The victims included six adults and six juveniles, with the youngest identified as an 11-year-old child.
At least three victims sustained serious injuries, including one who remained in critical condition Sunday morning. Five victims had been released from the hospital, while six others remained hospitalized, according to WCTV.
The shooting occurred shortly before 8 p.m. near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, within walking distance of Bragg Memorial Stadium, where Florida A&M hosted Arkansas-Pine Bluff earlier Saturday.
The Rattlers lost 31-28 to the Golden Lions in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup that ended approximately two hours before the shooting.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said preliminary findings indicated that a physical altercation involving a small group preceded the gunfire.
Authorities believe the incident may have involved a dispute between two or three people. Investigators have not established a motive or confirmed whether the shooting was connected to homecoming activities.
At least one injured individual is believed to be a Florida A&M student, according to Revell’s remarks reported by WCTV.
Officers assigned to the area responded quickly, assisting victims and transporting some to nearby hospitals.
“It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured,” Revell said in an official police statement.
Florida A&M officials acknowledged the shooting, emphasizing that the incident occurred near campus. The university said its campus remained safe and urged people to avoid the affected area, according to The Associated Press.
As of Sunday morning, authorities had announced no arrests or publicly identified suspects.
