The SWAC opened conference play with five games. The MEAC produced three wins, including another South Carolina State statement.
The CIAA continued sorting out its crowded upper tier. And in the SIAC, Kentucky State emerged from one of the weekend’s most important conference matchups with its perfect league record intact.
Oh, and the biggest win of the day came from a previously winless team.
Here’s what mattered most.
North Carolina A&T needed something to change
After opening the season 0-4 — including a 42-14 loss at Campbell the previous week — the Aggies returned home Saturday facing a nationally ranked Rhode Island team that entered No. 19 in the FCS rankings and 2-2 overall.
Instead of another difficult afternoon, A&T produced one of the biggest HBCU wins of the season.
The Aggies stunned Rhode Island 22-18, earning their first victory of 2026 and their biggest win since joining CAA Football.
SWAC:
Jackson State makes a statement, Prairie View stays perfect
The BoomBox Classic had plenty of the usual emotion before kickoff, but Jackson State made sure the conversation afterward was about football.
The Tigers handled Southern 35-17, moving to 4-0 and beginning SWAC play with a victory over one of the league’s traditional powers.
For T.C. Taylor’s team, the bigger takeaway is what the victory says about Jackson State’s trajectory. Saturday provided the first meaningful piece of evidence in that conversation.
Jackson State doesn’t have to be perfect. It has to consistently avoid the kind of conference slip that can turn a division race upside down.
So far, the Tigers haven’t.
Prairie View A&M 21, Grambling State 14
The State Fair Classic was a defensive, physical game that ultimately gave Prairie View exactly what it needed.
The Panthers erased an early deficit, took control in the second half, and held on after Grambling cut the margin to seven late. Prairie View improved to 2-0 in SWAC play, while Grambling fell to 0-1 in the conference.
Tevin Carter connected with Travon Jones on a 37-yard touchdown to tie the game, Jahbari Kuykendall gave Prairie View its first lead with a 17-yard touchdown run, and Carter later found Kheagian Heckaman for a 2-yard score.
Then came the most important sequence: Grambling’s Jacobe Robinson hit Tyson George for a 47-yard touchdown with 3:10 left, but Prairie View responded by draining the remaining clock.
That’s championship-football stuff.
Alcorn State 43, Texas Southern 40, OT
If Prairie View-Grambling was about control, Alcorn-Texas Southern was chaos.
Alcorn State blew a 34-12 lead, watched Texas Southern force overtime, and ultimately escaped with a victory.
That comeback tells us something about Texas Southern. The Tigers had every opportunity to fold after falling 22 points behind. Instead, they kept attacking and eventually tied the game.
But for Alcorn, the lesson is different.
The Braves got the conference victory, but allowing a 34-12 advantage to disappear will be something the coaching staff has to address.
MEAC:
South Carolina State keeps rolling
South Carolina State’s unbeaten run is no longer simply an early-season story.
It’s becoming the defining storyline of the MEAC.
The Bulldogs entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the Black College Football Division I FCS poll. They left Daytona Beach at 5-0 after beating Bethune-Cookman 31-21.
And this one wasn’t easy.
South Carolina State led 24-7 at halftime behind two Keely Watson touchdown passes and 136 rushing yards from Mason Pickett-Hicks. Bethune-Cookman responded in the third quarter and pulled within three.
That’s where South Carolina State separated itself.
Josh Shaw’s 1-yard touchdown run with 1:56 remaining ended the comeback attempt.
The larger point is consistency. That’s a different kind of development.
Delaware State 33, Towson 28
Delaware State provided one of the weekend’s best finishes.
The Hornets rallied to beat Towson 33-28, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 42 seconds remaining after an 11-play, 90-yard drive. Delaware State also forced four turnovers and turned those takeaways into 13 points.
That combination — late-game offense and opportunistic defense — is exactly what Delaware State will need as the season progresses.
Norfolk State 43, Chicago State 20
Norfolk State’s final score doesn’t tell the whole story.
Chicago State jumped out 7-0. Norfolk State then responded with 29 consecutive points and eventually pulled away for a 43-20 victory.
The Spartans finished with 623 total yards, including 358 rushing.
Jalyn Daniels was particularly explosive, rushing for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, including a 95-yard touchdown run. DaJean Golmond threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns, while Jason Wonodi added a 76-yard rushing touchdown.
That is the kind of offensive performance that can change how a team is viewed heading into the heart of the season.
CIAA:
Virginia State and Virginia Union keep pace
Virginia State entered the day 2-0 in conference play and left it with another win, beating Winston-Salem State 49-19.
The Trojans were already coming off conference wins over Bowie State and Elizabeth City State. Saturday’s result pushed Virginia State to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in CIAA play.
The important part is that Virginia State has recovered quickly from its 66-0 loss to South Carolina State.
That loss remains the blemish on the résumé, but the Trojans have otherwise handled their CIAA schedule.
Virginia Union 14, Fayetteville State 0
Virginia Union took a completely different route.
The Panthers shut out Fayetteville State 14-0, improving to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in CIAA play.
That’s three straight conference victories for Virginia Union.
And while 14 points isn’t an offensive explosion, a shutout in conference play is significant. Virginia Union entered the season as the CIAA’s preseason favorite, and Saturday’s result kept the Panthers firmly in the championship conversation.
SIAC:
Kentucky State grabs control of the conversation
The SIAC’s most important Saturday matchup featured two teams that entered 2-0 in conference play.
Kentucky State came into Albany riding a three-game winning streak, while Albany State had won consecutive SIAC games after an 0-2 start. The matchup also featured two of the conference’s more productive offenses and defenses.
The result moved Kentucky State to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in SIAC play, while Albany State dropped to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
That changes the complexion of the SIAC race. In other words, this wasn’t simply another September conference game.
