Mississippi Valley State University athletics is apologizing to fans following what the department described as a disappointing game-day experience during Saturday’s football game at Rice-Totten Stadium.
In a message addressed to Delta Devils fans, MVSU Director of Athletics Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson acknowledged shortcomings in the overall atmosphere and operations surrounding the game.
“At Mississippi Valley State University, we hold ourselves to a high standard, and this weekend we fell short,” Shields-Gadson wrote.
The athletic department cited several issues, ranging from operational delays to the overall atmosphere inside the stadium. Shields-Gadson said the experience did not reflect the standard MVSU hopes to provide for its alumni, students and community.
The apology comes as the university looks to improve the fan experience for its remaining home games.
“Our fans are the heartbeat of Rice-Totten Stadium, and your passion drives our programs,” Shields-Gadson wrote.

She said MVSU is reviewing its game-day operations and plans to address the problems before the team’s next home game.
The department did not detail specific operational issues in the statement, but said the review would cover “every aspect” of the game-day experience.
Shields-Gadson thanked fans for their patience and continued support of MVSU athletics while acknowledging the importance of delivering a stronger experience at Rice-Totten Stadium.
