Jaylon Tolbert put together a performance Alcorn State fans won’t soon forget.
The senior quarterback from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, delivered a career night Saturday, throwing for 485 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Braves to a wild 53-51 double-overtime victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the 37th annual Southern Heritage Classic.
And Tolbert wasn’t simply putting up numbers — he was keeping Alcorn State alive.
The Braves trailed by 14 points before Tolbert helped engineer the comeback, repeatedly making plays through the air as Alcorn State rallied for its first SWAC victory of the season.
Tolbert completed 32 of 45 passes, finishing with 485 yards and five touchdowns. He also contributed on the ground, rushing seven times for 36 yards.
The performance earned Tolbert national recognition.
He was named the BOXTOROW HBCU Co-Player of the Week and received honorable mention recognition for the FCS Stats Perform Offensive Player of the Week. The SWAC also named Tolbert its Offensive Player of the Week.
Tolbert’s monster night also pushed him further up the national statistical rankings.
Through three games, Tolbert has completed 72 of 95 passes for 869 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. His 75.8% completion percentage ranks among the nation’s best, and his 869 passing yards rank No. 4 in the FCS.

The production is a continuation of what Tolbert showed during his junior season. He threw for 2,094 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2025 while completing 63.7% of his passes.
Now, Tolbert has taken his game to another level.
His performance against Arkansas-Pine Bluff showed the kind of quarterback Alcorn State has under center — one capable of carrying an offense when the game gets chaotic.
The Braves needed every bit of Tolbert’s production Saturday night. After falling behind by two touchdowns, Alcorn State kept battling until the game went to overtime, where Tolbert and the offense eventually helped deliver the victory.
