Jared Lockhart showed his mettle in Jackson State’s comeback

Jackson State didn’t need Jared Lockhart to put up video-game numbers to leave Nashville with a victory.

The Tigers needed their sophomore quarterback to make the right decisions, protect the football and deliver when the game was on the line.

According to coach T.C. Taylor, Lockhart did exactly that.

Lockhart completed 17 of 26 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown in Jackson State’s 26-24 comeback victory over Tennessee State. He also ran for 32 yards, giving the Tigers another weapon on the ground. Most importantly, he finished the night without a turnover.

“He played well enough for us to win the football game,” Taylor said on Monday.

That might sound like a modest assessment.

But considering the circumstances, Taylor’s comments revealed plenty of confidence in his young quarterback.

Lockhart got Jackson State on the board early, connecting with sophomore receiver Jabari Jones for an 88-yard touchdown that gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead. Jones finished with four catches for 117 yards.

From there, the game became a test of Lockhart’s composure.

Tennessee State built a 17-7 halftime lead before Jackson State fought its way back. Lockhart didn’t panic, according to Taylor. Instead, he continued making the types of decisions the coaching staff expects from its quarterback.

Taylor pointed to Lockhart’s ability to work through his progressions, take care of the football and sustain drives.

“He stood in there and made some great throws when we needed him to,” Taylor said.

That became especially important late.

With Jackson State trailing 24-23 in the fourth quarter, Lockhart helped orchestrate a 15-play, 77-yard drive that consumed more than six minutes. The Tigers eventually reached the Tennessee State 3-yard line before Andrew Ivaniciuc kicked the game-winning 21-yard field goal with 2:31 remaining.

Taylor specifically highlighted that final drive.

“That was a heck of a drive that last drive,” he said.

For a sophomore quarterback making his first start of the season, Taylor said Lockhart showed the exact qualities Jackson State needs from the position.

He made plays with his arm. He made plays with his legs. He avoided the costly mistake.

And when the Tigers needed to put themselves in position to win, he delivered.

“He’s only going to get better,” Taylor said.

That might be the most encouraging part for Jackson State.

Lockhart’s 222 passing yards were good enough to lead the Tigers, but the bigger story was how he managed the game. Jackson State finished with 402 total yards and 22 first downs while committing no turnovers.

Taylor believes Lockhart is still developing into the quarterback he can become.

“He’s right where we want him to be,” Taylor said.

That means Saturday’s performance wasn’t necessarily the finished product.

It was a starting point.

Lockhart entered the season with expectations after earning SWAC co-Freshman of the Year honors in 2025. He went 5-0 as a starter last season and returns as the Tigers’ clear leader on offense.

Now he has another comeback victory on his résumé.

And if Taylor is right, Jackson State’s sophomore quarterback may only be getting started.
