The only Division I basketball school without a permanent head coach might be on the cusp of finally naming one.
CBS Sports College basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported on X Sunday night that Texas Southern is set to hire Seton Hall assistant coach Corey Lowery as its next head coach. However, Texas Southern has not made an official announcement.
HBCU Legends reported that Lowery was a candidate for the job but had not yet been hired.
The report comes months after the university announced in June that DHR Global would lead the search for its next coach and said it would not comment publicly until one finalist had been identified.
Who is Corey Lowery?
If Lowery is hired, he would bring extensive experience to Texas Southern. He has spent 27 years in coaching, including 16 seasons as a head coach. Most recently, he served four seasons on Shaheen Holloway’s Seton Hall staff as an assistant.
Lowery also has HBCU coaching experience. He coached Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and earned CIAA Coach of the Year honors in 2021-22.
Before taking over at Lincoln, Lowery served as an assistant coach at Saint Peter’s. He also led Essex County College, where he won six consecutive regular-season conference championships.
Texas Southern’s vacancy opened on April 7, when Johnny Jones resigned after eight seasons to join Will Wade’s coaching staff at LSU. The Tigers named longtime assistant Shyrone Chatman interim head coach on April 20.
