Marshall Faulk is leaning on familiar voices as he builds Southern University football, and Mike Martz was the latest to stop by Jaguars practice.
The Hall of Fame running back said Monday that his former coach spent the past four days around the program, working with quarterbacks and offering guidance to the staff.
That kind of presence matters to Faulk. He described Martz — the offensive coordinator of the “Greatest Show on Turf” during the St. Louis Rams Super Bowl XXXIV title season in 1999 with Faulk as the catalyst — as part of a coaching network that includes current Southern defensive coordinator Curtis Johnson and ex-NFL coach Dick Vermeil, two names he views as important influences in his own development as a head coach.
“Luckily, I got my old head coach Mike Martz out here,” Faulk told WBRZ. “He’s imparting a little wisdom to the kids and talking to my quarterbacks, and he’s in there doing the most important part, which is helping coach the coaches.”
Faulk’s message was simple: good coaches are built by being coached themselves. He said he has taken “bits and pieces” from the mentors around him and continues to call on them for answers as he settles into his first head coaching job.
No starting quarterback announcement for Southern football yet, but there was an interesting face out at practice today.

For Southern, the visit is another sign of the NFL influence. The Jaguars have been steadily assembling a group with both professional and high-level college experience, and Martz’s presence fits the theme of a program trying to blend legacy, teaching and top-end football knowledge.
