GRAMBLING, La. — Bobby Brown scored 18 points as Alabama State University defeated Grambling State University 68-51 on Saturday night at the Assemble Center.

Brandon Graham and Terrance LeFlore each added 13 points for the Hornets (7-5, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) and Jamel Waters chipped in with 8 points and seven assists. Luther Page and DeMarcus Robinson led the team with eight rebounds each.

Grambling State (1-9, 0-1) hit only 37.5 percent from the field during the contest. Antwan Scott scored a team-high 12 points and Windale Glinton added 11 points and led the Tigers with eight rebounds.

Alabama State went 25-of-61 from the field overall, sank 9-of-12 from the free throw line and 9-of-29 from 3-point range.

The Hornets led by two points, 61-43, at the break and had no trouble outlasting the Tigers in the second period.

This was the fifth straight loss of the season for GSU.

@Jackson State 61, Alabama A&M 68

JACKSON, Miss. — Jeremy Crutcher scored 16 points as Alabama A&M University used 3-point shooting to post a 68-61 win over Jackson State University at the Williams Center.

Neither team shot the ball well. Alabama A&M was 18 of 46 from the field; Jackson State 18 of 42. The Bulldogs, however, converted 8 of 23 from behind the arc.

Green Hill scored 14 points for Alabama A&M (4-7, 1-0 SWAC). Jerome Hunter added 10 points and eight boards.

Brandon West scored 19 points and Jeffery Stubbs added another 14 for Jackson State (4-9) in first-year coach Wayne Brent’s SWAC debut. Derell Taylor, the lone returning starter from a year ago, added 12 points and Treshawn Bolden contributed 10.

The Tigers leading scorer Julysses Nobles, who averages more than 17 points per game, was 0-for-3 from the field with five turnovers and did not play in the second half.

@Mississippi Valley State 73, Arkansas Pine Bluff 78

GREENWOOD, Miss. — DaVon Haynes scored 20 points Saturday and Mississippi Valley State
University rallied to beat the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff 78-73 in their Southwestern Athletic Conference opener.

Daniel Broughton scored 14 points for MVSU (5-9) and Tevin Hammond added 12. The game was played off campus at the Harrison Complex

MVSU jumped to a 6-0 lead but UAPB (2-11) came back on a 7-0 run, then widened its lead to 10. MVSU ripped a 7-1 run to trail 40-39 at halftime.

MVSU took a 45-43 lead in the second half, then expanded the margin by five points, but UAPB came back to lead 54-48 with 11:58 to play.

A layup by Ervin Thomas cut UAPB’s lead to one, 57-56 with 8:20 left, but UAPB pulled ahead. James Currington’s dunk cut UAPB’s lead to 76-73 with 25.8 seconds to play, but the Delta Devils could get no closer.

Jeff Simmons led MVSU with 20, DeAngelo Priar scored 16 and Currington added 11.

@Texas Southern 83, Alcorn State 66

HOUSTON — Aaric Murray scored 26 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to lead Texas Southern University to an 83-66 victory over Alcorn State University Saturday night from the HP&E Center.

Jose Rodriguez added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (5-8, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Lawrence Johnson-Danner scored 14 points with five rebounds and DeAngelo Scott chipped in with 13 points. The Tigers hit 54 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free-throw line.

Alcorn State led by four early but lost a step late in the first period to trail Texas Southern 44-31 at the break.

Texas Southern was in control throughout the second period, leading by as many as 24 points at 14:41 in the second.

LeAntwan Luckett scored 24 points with five assists for the Braves (3-10, 0-1). Octavius Brown added 14 points and led the team with 12 rebounds.

The loss was the ninth straight for Alcorn State.

@Prairie View 57, Southern 60

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Calvin Godfrey and Malcolm Miller each scored 16 points as Southern University edged Prairie View A&M University 60-57 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday night.

Trailing by 50-45 late, the Jaguars (5-9, 1-0) pulled within one after layups by Javan Mitchell and Christopher Hyder.

Prairie View (2-11, 0-1) responded with a Tre Hagood free throw and a lay-in by Demondre Chapman. Southern U countered as Hyder hit another layup and Miller drained a 3-pointer to grab the lead. Godfrey followed with four free throws to push the lead to six.

The Panthers cut their deficit to two after two layups by John Brisco. After a split pair of free throws by Godfrey, Brisco couldn’t connect on a 3-point attempt in the final seconds.

Southern U shot 46.8 percent from the field. Hyder finished with eight assists.
Brisco paced Prairie View with 17 points.
