Southern advances to finals
Led by Deidra Jackson’s 23 points, Southern held off Mississippi Valley 64-56 on Friday to secure a spot in the SWAC Women’s Basketball Championship game on Saturday.
Down 25-31 at the half, the Jaguars made a push in the second period outscoring the Devilettes 39-35, while shooting 77 percent from the free-throw line. Ashley Augerson (11) and Jamie Floyd (10) also posted double figures for Southern.
Mississippi Valley was lead by Colby Stallings with 17 points. Ashley Brown added 14 points and Kristen Ellis tallied 11 points to round out the Devilettes in double figures.
This will be Southern’s first championship appearance since 2006. Tip off is set for 4 p.m., on Saturday.
