The 2026 HBCU football schedule is packed with classics and homecoming showdowns.
But some of the best games may be the ones that do not get the most national buzz at first glance.
Here are several matchups that could carry serious intrigue once the season kicks off.
North Carolina Central at Texas Southern — Aug. 29
This is the kind of opener that can tell you a lot about both teams right away. North Carolina Central enters 2026 still as one of the MEAC programs but has a lot to prove with the recent dominance of South Carolina State and emergence of Delaware State. Texas Southern gets a measuring stick home game to set the tone for its season.
What makes this one sneaky good is the early-season pressure factor. Games like this are often treated as tune-ups, but if either team slips, the impact can follow it into October and November.
Edward Waters at Jackson State — Sept. 5
Jackson State’s name alone signals big game, but the Hope Labor Day Classic gives this matchup more than just branding. Edward Waters, favorites to win the SIAC, gets a chance to step into one of the bigger stages in HBCU football, and that makes the game more interesting than a typical D2 versus D1 nonconference date.
Jackson State is expected to be part of the SWAC title conversation, so this becomes a useful early test of how sharp the Tigers look out of the gate.
Tennessee State at Florida A&M — Sept. 19
This one has the feel of a quietly important early-season game. Florida A&M — coming off a disappointing two-year lull — are playing for purpose under new coach Quinn Gray. Tennessee State, which was 2-10 last season and picked to finish last in the OVC, needs a signature win badly.
South Carolina State at Bethune-Cookman — Sept. 26
South Carolina State enters 2026 with major expectations after being ranked No. 1 in the inaugural preseason Black College Football Poll and MEAC poll. A much improved Bethune-Cookman with a fun offense gets the chance to host the top program in HBCU football.
A win by the Bulldogs here is expected. However, a good showing by the Wildcats can possibly increase the team’s likelihood of staying power in the SWAC.
