Prairie View A&M has the championship pedigree.
Grambling State has a chance to capitalize on the defending champion’s struggles.
Alcorn State has the offensive firepower to change the race. But with the regular season entering its decisive stretch, every contender has a weakness that could ultimately determine its fate in the SWAC West standings.
The race is far from settled, but the margin for error is shrinking. Here’s a closer look at all six teams and the key games remaining on their schedules.
Grambling State: Can the Tigers fix their biggest weakness?
Grambling State is one of the most difficult teams in the West to evaluate. The Tigers have demonstrated enough offensive potential to remain in contention, but their defensive struggles have raised serious questions about whether they can produce the complete performances required to win a division championship.

The 61-31 loss to Alabama A&M on Saturday brought those concerns into focus.
Mickey Joseph indicated on Monday that defensive staff changes were off the table at that time. He expressed confidence in his coaches and the defensive scheme but acknowledged the need to evaluate whether the players could execute it effectively.
That evaluation will be critical. Grambling doesn’t necessarily need a dominant defense to win the West, but it cannot continue giving opponents so many opportunities to score.
The games that could decide Grambling’s season
October 31 at Texas Southern: A divisional road game the Tigers need to win. Texas Southern is struggling, but Grambling cannot afford to overlook an opponent with an opportunity to disrupt the race.
November 7 vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff: This could be one of the most consequential remaining games in the West. A victory would strengthen Grambling’s position while potentially eliminating one of the division’s outside challengers.
November 28 vs. Southern in the Bayou Classic: The regular-season finale could carry major implications if Grambling remains in the championship hunt.
Prairie View A&M: The defending champion must prove it can finish
Prairie View A&M entered 2026 with championship expectations after winning the 2025 SWAC title. The Panthers opened conference play with victories over Texas Southern and Grambling State, but consecutive losses to Mississippi Valley State and Southern raised questions about their ability to defend their crown.
The Panthers’ 41-38 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday was an important response.
That performance showed Prairie View can execute under pressure. It also highlighted the challenge facing the Panthers: They have the ability to win close games, but they need to stop making those games so difficult.

The games that could decide Prairie View’s season
November 14 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff: Prairie View’s most important remaining divisional matchup. A road victory would strengthen its position and help protect its lead over Grambling and Alcorn.
November 7 vs. Alabama A&M: Although it is not a West Division matchup, this game could be critical to Prairie View’s momentum and conference standing.
November 21 at Alabama State: The regular-season finale provides another opportunity to secure a strong finish.
The Panthers have already beaten Grambling and Alcorn, giving them valuable head-to-head advantages. Those wins could become decisive if teams finish tied in conference play.
Alcorn State: The Braves have the firepower to win, but can they get enough stops?
Alcorn State might have the most explosive offense in the West. The Braves have repeatedly demonstrated an ability to put points on the board, but their defensive inconsistency has made their games far more difficult than necessary.
Alcorn scored 53 points in a 53-51 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 43 in a 43-40 overtime win against Texas Southern and 59 in a 63-59 loss to Grambling State. The Braves then scored 38 against Prairie View but lost 41-38.
The pattern is clear: Alcorn can score with nearly anyone, but its defense has not consistently done enough to protect those offensive performances.
Jaylon Tolbert gives Alcorn the ability to challenge defenses vertically and turn a close game into a shootout. But the Braves need to complement his production with better defensive efforts.

The games that could decide Alcorn’s season
October 31 at Mississippi Valley State: A crucial divisional road game. Alcorn needs to avoid another setback against a team capable of disrupting the standings.
November 14 at Southern: This matchup could determine whether the Braves remain within reach of the division lead. Southern has already demonstrated it can beat a top contender.
November 7 vs. Florida A&M: Although Florida A&M is an East Division opponent, the game offers Alcorn a chance to build momentum before the final stretch.
Alcorn’s loss to Prairie View was particularly costly because it surrendered a head-to-head advantage. The Braves now need to make up ground through their remaining conference games.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff: The underdog needs a strong finish
Arkansas-Pine Bluff entered the season with limited preseason expectations, but the Golden Lions have shown they can be competitive against teams higher in the projected standings.
Their 41-10 victory over Southern demonstrated their ability to take control of a game. The 53-51 loss to Alcorn showed their offensive potential, but it also exposed a defensive weakness that could prevent them from making a serious run.

The Golden Lions cannot afford to rely on their offense to bail them out every week. Their best path to a division title requires more balance and a strong finish.
The games that could decide UAPB’s season
November 7 at Grambling State: Arguably UAPB’s most important remaining divisional matchup. A victory would directly damage a leading contender while improving the Golden Lions’ own position.
November 14 vs. Prairie View A&M: Another opportunity to challenge a team near the top of the standings. UAPB will need to be disciplined on both sides of the ball.
November 21 vs. Alabama State: A chance to finish the regular season with momentum, although Alabama State is an East Division opponent.
UAPB has shown enough to deserve consideration, but a division championship would require a major finish. Its immediate goal should be to turn its competitive performances into victories against the teams directly ahead of it.
Southern: The Jaguars can upset a contender, but consistency is essential
Southern has already demonstrated that it can change the division race. The Jaguars’ 28-14 victory over Prairie View was a significant result because it exposed the defending champion’s vulnerability and gave Southern a much-needed conference win.

That was the type of performance Southern needs to reproduce. The problem is that the Jaguars also suffered a 41-10 loss to UAPB, demonstrating how difficult it has been for them to sustain their best football.
The games that could decide Southern’s season
October 24 at Texas Southern: A divisional matchup Southern needs to win. The Jaguars cannot afford to surrender ground to a team that is also trying to change its season.
November 7 vs. Bethune-Cookman: An East Division game that could help Southern build momentum, although it does not directly decide the West standings.
November 28 vs. Grambling State in the Bayou Classic: This is Southern’s most important remaining divisional game. The rivalry carries enormous significance, and the result could have championship implications if Grambling remains in contention.
Southern is more likely to influence the championship race than win it. But if the Jaguars can string together victories and play with the same discipline they showed against Prairie View, they could make the final standings more complicated.
Texas Southern: The Tigers need to change their trajectory
Texas Southern has the toughest path of any West Division team. Their 0-3 conference start has left them chasing the rest of the division.
Their opening victory over North Carolina Central showed some promise.
That performance offered a glimpse of what Texas Southern can do when its offense finds a rhythm. But the Tigers have not maintained that level consistently enough to become a reliable contender.

Defensively, Texas Southern must improve its ability to get off the field and prevent opponents from turning routine drives into points. Head coach Cris Dishman announced he will take over play-calling duties to reduce the number of big plays the defense has been allowing.
The games that could decide Texas Southern’s season
October 24 vs. Southern: A pivotal divisional game. A victory would give Texas Southern a chance to begin climbing out of the conference standings.
October 31 vs. Grambling State: This matchup could have an outsized effect on the West race. Beating Grambling would not only help Texas Southern but also damage one of the leading contenders.
November 7 vs. Alabama State: Another opportunity to build momentum, although it is an East Division matchup.
Texas Southern needs to approach these games as opportunities to change its season rather than simply trying to avoid another loss.
