Tennessee State University‘s nationally recognized Aristocrat of Bands will not travel to the Tigers’ Sept. 5 road football game against the University of Georgia, university officials announced in a statement to alumni.
According to the statement from Tennessee State President Dwayne Tucker, the decision was made after consultations with band leadership, the university’s chief financial officer and the Division of Student Affairs.
School officials said the decision was driven by a combination of Southeastern Conference game-day policies and the financial burden associated with sending the band’s traveling party to Athens.

Unlike the traditional HBCU football experience, SEC policies significantly limit opportunities for visiting bands to perform. Those restrictions include a shortened halftime performance and no extended postgame performance, according to Tucker.
The university also noted that visiting band members are required to have ticketed seats inside the stadium. Tennessee State said it would have been required to purchase a $100 stadium ticket for every visiting band member, cheerleader and member of the Sophisticated Ladies dance line.

Officials said the cost of purchasing tickets for more than 220 students and staff who would travel to the game was a major factor in the decision.
“As a result,” Tucker’s statement said, “the Aristocrat of Bands, Cheerleaders, and Sophisticated Ladies will not travel to the Georgia game due to the unique operational requirements and performance restrictions associated with SEC game-day protocols.”
Despite the decision for the Georgia trip, Tennessee State emphasized its continued commitment to supporting the Grammy Award-winning Aristocrat of Bands throughout the remainder of the season.
The university said travel funding remains in place for every other home and away football game during the 2026 season.
“We remain fully committed to supporting the Grammy Award-winning Aristocrat of Bands, with travel funded for all remaining home and away football games this season,” Tucker said in the statement.
