A month after it was reported that former two-time NBA champion Lamar Odom has an interest in coaching, he has officially shot his shot at Winston-Salem State.

Odom made his intentions known in an interview with The Today Show to promote his documentary, “Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom,” which chronicles his complicated battle with addiction, overcoming near death, and his public marriage to Khloe Kardashian, among other things.

During the interview, the 14-year NBA veteran discussed his interest in coaching and how the relationships he built during his playing career steered him toward this path.

Odom expresses desire to coach

“I would love to coach because I have a basketball mind that’s just waiting to go,” said Odom. “You know Kobe [Bryant] controlled the court, but I kind of like controlled the locker room. A part of coaching is being able to deal with different personalities at different times. So, I think through my relationship with Phil Jackson and Pat Riley, I think I’m prepared for that.”

When asked what his preferred destination was, Odom proclaimed his interest in the open position at Winston-Salem State.

He also stated that he wants to go back to school to get his undergraduate degree so that “people will take him seriously.”

The declaration comes nearly a month after HBCU basketball insider Liv Antilla reported a CIAA school had expressed interest in Odom.

Winston-Salem State’s head coaching position was left vacant when the institution dismissed Corey Thompson from the role after less than two seasons in February, before the team’s home regular-season finale against Shaw.

At the time of his termination, Coach Thompson held a 12-37 overall record and a 4-24 conference record.
