Southern University head football coach Marshall Faulk left Saturday’s spring showcase encouraged by both sides of the ball.
Faulk, entering his first full season leading the Jaguars, said the defense set the tone early with an aggressive mindset that will define the program’s identity moving forward.
“We’re not going to be a bend-but-don’t-break type defense,” Faulk told the media following the team scrimmage. “We’re going to come after people. I like how the defense attacked the offense early — that’s what Coach (Todd) Lyght brings.”
Faulk praised the offensive unit’s response as the scrimmage unfolded, pointing to big plays through the air and improved execution.
“Towards the end, the offense started to click with big plays through the air and finishing drives in the end zone,” he said. “If we want to win the SWAC and go to the Celebration Bowl, our receivers have to win those 50-50 balls. Today, we saw that.”
Southern quarterbacks engaged in tight battle
The Jaguars’ quarterback competition also remains a focus. Returning signal-caller Ashton Strother and Long Beach City College (California) transfer quarterback Wyatt McCauley both split first-team reps on Saturday, and Faulk said the evaluation remains ongoing.
“It’s heated right now,” Faulk said. “They’ve both earned the right for us to review the film before making any decisions. I don’t think it’s fair to speak on either one without watching the tape because they’re both really in it.”
Southern will now turn its attention to offseason workouts as Faulk and his staff continue to build a roster aimed at rebounding from a two-win season in 2025.
