5 players to watch in the MEAC men’s basketball tournament

Thanks to a unique situation, only seven of eight MEAC men’s basketball teams will have a chance at the conference title this year.

With that in mind, here’s a look at five players to watch for in the MEAC tournament.

Cedric Taylor III, 6’7 jr. guard/forward, Howard

Taylor transferred from Morehouse following a stellar two years there and has added size and scoring to an already talented Bison team.

Taylor is second to Bryce Harris in scoring (17.4) while grabbing nearly 7 rebounds a game. He’s one more player you have to account for when facing Howard.

Elijah Davis, 6’1 sr. guard, Morgan State

A Bowie State transfer, Davis has given the Bears the classic point guard; one who can set up his teammates to score and can get and make his own shot if necessary.

Davis is second on the Bears in scoring while handing out 150 assists and leading the MSU with 29 steals.

If he’s playing his game, the Bears could be a headache for Howard again in the championship game.

Anthony McComb III, 6’3 sr. guard, Norfolk State

Another Spartan transfer portal find, McComb has been the consistent scorer NSU has needed, averaging 17 points a game and leading the team in free throws made and three-pointers made.

Norfolk State is the champion until further notice and McComb goes a long way to helping them defend their title.

Dionte Johnson, 6’0 sr. guard, North Carolina Central

Johnson leads the Eagles in assists and steals, and his job as point guard will continue to be important if Central has a chance in this tournament.

If he’s able to find teammates for easy shots (and add his own offense), NCCU could be in the championship game on Saturday.

Jayden Johnson, 6’1 soph. guard, South Carolina State

Johnson was the pre-season pick for MEAC player of the year and while the Bulldogs record isn’t what it was last season, the sophomore guard has done his part.

Johnson leads the Bulldogs in scoring, assists and steals. If he can put together a hot streak, South Carolina State could return to the title game.
