Tennessee State men’s basketball arrives at the 2026 OVC basketball tournament as the clear favorite, riding a historic regular-season title share and suffocating defense into the semifinals.

The Tigers (21-9 overall, 15-5 OVC) clinched the No. 1 seed and a double-bye, snapping a 31-year drought for an OVC regular-season crown — their third overall and first since 1994-95.

Why Tennessee State can take OVC tournament

Key Strengths

  • Balanced Scoring: Aaron Nkrumah, the OVC Player of the Year, lit up the finale with 20 points (23 vs. UT Martin earlier), backed by Travis Harper’s 16. The group’s depth and efficiency fueled an offense that leads the league in scoring at 80. 4 points per game. The Tigers also

  • Momentum: Closing with four straight wins (seven of eight), TSU boasts the OVC’s top NET ranking and beat UNLV non-conference. Coach Nolan Smith, Co-Coach of the Year and Hugh Durham finalist, has rebuilt the program in Year 1.

Tournament Path

As top seed at Evansville’s Ford Center, TSU opens Friday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPNU) in the semis against a UT Martin team it swept during the regular season. A win would put the Tigers in the championship game and one step closer to an NCAA bid.

Why Tennessee State might hit a roadblock

Potential Weaknesses

The Tigers were a great 10-2 at home during the regular season, but went only 10-7 away from Nashville. Though TSU will be favored, not playing in front of a home crowd won’t provide a built-in edge.

Defense: TSU, which has been great on offense, hasn’t been as consistent on the defensive end. The Tigers rank No. 8 in the OVC in scoring defense and 10th in field goal percentage defense. They make up for it with a plus-3.83 rebounding margin and conference-leading 9.53 steals per game

Outlook: With Nkrumah’s scoring and leadership, and head coach Nolan Smith getting the team to quickly come together, Tennessee State profiles as a March contender.
