The Alabama A&M University women’s basketball team etched its name in program lore Thursday night, grinding out a 64–61 victory over Southern University to cap a 17-1 SWAC regular-season mark.

The Bulldogs seized control early at the AAMU Event Center, jumping out to a 17–11 lead after a dominant first quarter behind Jaida Belton’s early double-double threat.

Alabama A&M carried a slim 30–29 halftime edge despite Southern’s rally, setting the stage for a second-half thriller.

The Bulldogs battled in a back-and-forth second half

Momentum swung wildly after the break with multiple lead changes, but the Bulldogs reclaimed the driver’s seat in the third, entering the fourth up 49–46. Southern clawed back to within two in the dying seconds, but AAMU’s defense stood tall and its free-throw stroke — 65.7% on the night — sealed the three-point escape.

Jaida Belton dominated with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, notching her fifth double-double of the season to anchor the paint. Kaila Walker fired in 15 points, while Aniya Palmer sparked the bench with 11 points and five boards.

Coriah Beck added nine points, and Vanessa Wimberly nearly doubled up with eight points and eight rebounds.

The win lifts the Bulldogs to 21-9 overall (17-1 SWAC), earning them the top seed in the SWAC Tournament.
