Morehouse College has hired Brad Sherrod, who engineered back-to-back playoff runs at Texas Wesleyan University, as the next head football coach of the Maroon Tigers.

Sherrod brings more than 30 years of experience from the FBS to NAIA. The veteran coach most recently posted a 17-6 record over two seasons at Texas Wesleyan, including a historic 10-1 campaign in 2024 that delivered Texas Wesleyan’s first Sooner Athletic Conference title and a second-round NAIA playoff berth.

His 2025 squad shared the conference crown and earned the program’s first consecutive postseason trips.

Who is Brad Sherrod?

“Coach Sherrod is a proven program builder with a track record of sustained success and postseason performance,” Morehouse athletic director Harold Ellis said. “More importantly, he understands what it means to develop young men with purpose. Morehouse football has always stood for excellence, discipline, and leadership. We believe Coach Sherrod is the right leader to carry that tradition forward.”

Sherrod will replace Terance Mathis, a former NFL player, who lasted two seasons at Morehouse before being fired.

Sherrod’s Rams ranked among NAIA’s top scoring offenses during his debut year while establishing defensive consistency that fueled two playoff appearances. His arrival comes at a pivotal moment for Morehouse, which seeks to elevate its profile within the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and beyond.

Before Texas Wesleyan, Sherrod spent three seasons at UTSA, where his linebackers anchored defenses that powered back-to-back conference titles, three straight bowl games and multiple national Top-25 rankings. The Roadrunners led the nation in takeaways, rushing defense, sacks and tackles for loss during that stretch.

Sherrod’s résumé also features stints at Wake Forest, Sam Houston State, Delaware, Elon, Tennessee State, Western Carolina, East Tennessee State and UMass, giving him a broad perspective on building winners at every level.

What is Brad Sherrod’s vision for Morehouse?

“I’m honored to join Morehouse College, and guiding this program is a responsibility that I do not take lightly,” Sherrod said. “Our goal will be to build a championship-caliber program rooted in toughness, accountability, and brotherhood, while representing the College the right way on and off the field. I want to thank President (Dr. F. DuBois) Bowman, AD Harold Ellis, and everyone involved in the selection process for believing in me.”
