Southern University continued its strong run against Big 12 competition Sunday afternoon, defeating the University of Houston 70–62 at the Fertitta Center for its second straight win over a Big 12 opponent this season.

The Jaguars (6–3) controlled the game from start to finish, never trailing and holding the lead for more than 37 minutes. Their balanced scoring and decisive interior play set the tone early, while timely perimeter shooting thwarted every Houston comeback attempt.

Southern led 38–29 at halftime, stretched the margin to double digits in the third quarter, and built a game-high 16-point lead midway through the fourth. Houston mounted a late push, but Southern’s composure at the free-throw line and steady defense sealed the victory.

The win over Houston comes off the heels of the Jaguars taking down previously unbeaten Arizona.

Five Jaguars scored in double figures in balanced effort.

  • Olivia Delancy: 15 points, 3-of-5 from three-point range

  • Zaria Hurston: 11 points, 5 rebounds

  • Jaylia Reed: 11 points, including two three-pointers

  • DeMya Porter: 11 points, 6 rebounds

  • Jocelyn Tate: 8 points, 4 rebounds, key defensive stops

How Southern took down Houston

Southern jumped out with an 18–12 first quarter, capitalizing on Houston turnovers and scoring efficiently in transition. The Jaguars’ bench provided an early spark, helping build momentum that carried through the half.

In the second quarter, Southern attacked inside and spaced the floor with accurate perimeter shooting from Delancy and Reed. A late tip-in by Porter gave the Jaguars a nine-point cushion at the break.

Houston threatened in the third quarter behind forwards Ross and Hunter, but Southern’s inside presence and second-chance scoring preserved a double-digit advantage heading into the final period. Reed’s back-to-back three-pointers early in the fourth pushed the lead to 16, and the Jaguars held off Houston’s late rally with disciplined ball control and clutch free throws.
