Grambling Chasing crescendo finish as Southern seeks Bayou Classic reset

Saturday’s Bayou Classic in the Caesars Superdome sets up as a clash between a Grambling State team trying to cap a strong season and a Southern University squad desperate to turn one game into a year-long antidote.

The SWAC title race and Celebration Bowl may be out of reach for both. Still, the stakes in New Orleans remain enormous: bragging rights, recruiting optics, and a result that will be replayed in living rooms and barbershops until these rivals meet again.

Rival seasons heading opposite paths

Grambling arrives with momentum and a winning record, sitting at 7–4 overall and 4–3 in SWAC play, having won four of its last five and pushed into the upper tier of the WAC West Division.

The Tigers’ résumé includes close, gritty victories over Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman, as well as a signature 26–24 upset of a nationally ranked Jackson State team in Las Vegas.

Southern limps into New Orleans at 1–10, 0–7 in the SWAC, riding a nine-game losing streak and still searching for its first conference win of 2025.

The Jaguars’ season crashed after an early road victory at Mississippi Valley State, with tight losses—such as a 35–30 defeat to Texas Southern, despite big days from quarterback Ashton Strother and running back Barry Remo—illustrating a team that competes but cannot finish.

There is hope beyond the Bayou Classic, however. It was reported this week that Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk will be the Jaguars’ next head coach after spending one season as an assistant under Deion Sanders at Colorado.

Why Bayou Classic still matters

For both fan bases, this game functions as a de facto title bout. With conference goals gone, Grambling can make an 8–4 finish and second place in the SWAC West feel like a “great season” if it walks out with a win in the Dome.

For Southern, a Bayou Classic victory would not fix the record.

Still, it would change the mood entirely, turning 2–10 with a rivalry trophy into something far more tolerable than 1–11 and another painful chapter.

History sharpens the edge. Southern has controlled recent Bayou Classics, winning the last three meetings and giving head coach Terrence Graves a perfect record in the rivalry since his return to Baton Rouge.

Grambling, meanwhile, knows that letting a superior overall season end with another loss to its chief rival would blunt much of the goodwill built in year two under Mickey Joseph.

Matchup: Grambling’s balance vs. Southern’s pride

On paper, Grambling has the more complete profile. The Tigers bring an offense that has shown it can strike quickly and also grind, highlighted by earlier outbursts, such as a 55–7 win over Langston, as well as clutch, late-game drives in several one-score wins.

Southern counters with urgency and familiarity. Even in defeat, the Jaguars have found production from Strother under center and Remo in the backfield, suggesting they can move the ball if they protect it and avoid falling into obvious passing situations.
