The HBCU football coaching carousel continues with a Division I school making a change.
Hampton announced Sunday that football coach Trenton Boykin had been relieved of his duties immediately.
“It is always difficult to make changes, particularly when it involves dedicated professionals and student-athletes,” Hampton athletic director Anthony D. Henderson said in a statement released by the university. “Our commitment remains unwavering to ensuring Hampton football achieves the highest standards of excellence on and off the field. We want to thank Coach Boykin for his dedication and leadership and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Boykin took over on an interim basis following Robert Prunty’s departure before the 2024 season.
The Pirates finished a promising 5-7 (2-6 in Coastal Athletic Association play) that year, but 2025 was a step back as the team finished 2-10 overall and did not record a single CAA win.
The Pirates’ lone Division I win was the annual Battle of the Bay against Michael Vick and Norfolk State 41-34.
A national search will begin for Hampton’s next coach, the university said in the announcement of the change.
As an alum, this is just sad, sad, sad. Their identity is lost in all sports. They should’ve never left the MEAC. They’ve been struggling since joining the Big South. They’ll have their 3rd coach in 4 years, and I don’t see any glimmer of light coming out of the football program. They use to at least beat Howard. Now they can’t even do that! Go back to the MEAC!
