Could Jackson State quarterback JaCobian Morgan be under center for the Tigers with the SWAC East division championship on the line?
Morgan has been out since sustaining an injury to his left foot on Oct. 26 versus Grambling State in Las Vegas.
Head coach T.C. Taylor on Monday addressed Morgan’s status at his weekly press conference, confirming that the junior signal-caller was on the practice field this week.
His movements are expected to be closely monitored before it is determined whether Morgan can play in the regular season finale against Alcorn State on Saturday.
“He’ll be back in practice, so we’ll move him around a little bit,” Taylor said. “Hard to say where he’ll be when Friday gets here, so we’ll get to examine him these next three days out here on the football field and see where we’re at.”
A win by Jackson State over Alcorn State (5-6, 4-3 SWAC) would secure the SWAC East for the Tiger for the fourth time over the last five seasons and a spot in the conference championship game on Dec. 6 versus Prairie View.
Taylor emphasized this week the need for caution, stating the program won’t rush Morgan back prematurely.
“We’re going to make sure we protect him, though,” Taylor said. “You don’t want to put him out there too quick if he’s not healthy. We want to trust our trainers, trust the doctors and just see how he moves this week.”
Before the injury, Morgan tallied 1,183 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, with just two interceptions on the season.
If Morgan is once again unable to go, freshman quarterback Jared Lockhart will continue to lead the offense. He is 3-0 as a starter and has thrown for 505 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception this season.
