Florida A&M head football coach James Colzie III expressed strong confidence in newly appointed athletic director John Davis.
Davis, who is set to officially begin his tenure in January, is a familiar name and face to the second-year Florida A&M coach.
He played defensive back at Florida State before embarking on a career in athletics and business, ultimately serving as the Secretary of the Florida Lottery under Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“You know, John played at Florida State — he was a defensive back before my time,” Colzie said on Monday. “We’ve had discussions over the last 30 years, and there’s a certain creed that comes with being a defensive back there. I haven’t had a formal sit-down with him yet, but I know his pedigree and where he comes from.”
Davis replaces Angela Suggs, who was assigned as special advisor to new FAMU President Marva Johnson after being placed on administrative leave since being accused of charging over $23,000 to her Florida Sports Foundation business credit card while she was employed there.
Colzie added that he expects Davis to bring leadership and energy to the program’s next chapter.
“Hopefully, he’ll do a really good job once he starts,” Colzie said. “I have extreme confidence in everything that he’s going to do. I’m excited that he’s joining us.”
