North Carolina Central receiver Chauncey Spikes had a first quarter many pass catchers dream of.
Spikes hauled in five passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns from Walker Harris in the first period as the Eagles led Howard from start to finish, winning the MEAC contest 35-14.
Spikes was the main beneficiary of Walker Harris’ passes as Central (6-3, 1-1 MEAC) got back in the win column.
Following a Howard punt, Harris and Spikes connected four times for 54 yards on the first drive, ending in a 13-yard touchdown pass.
After another scoreless Bison possession, Harris floated a pass to Spikes, who grabbed the ball at midfield and was untouched the rest of the way for an 80-yard score and a 14-0 North Carolina Central lead.
All told, Spikes caught nine passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Harris completed 17 of 29 passes for 321 yards and threw four touchdown passes to offset two Howard interceptions. Harris also ran for a 13-yard touchdown.
The Eagles also got 126 yards rushing from running back A.J. Rodgers.
Howard (4-5, 1-1 MEAC) was led by quarterback Tyriq Starks, who ran for a touchdown and threw a scoring pass to Zaden Jackson.
