Jackson State quarterback JaCobian Morgan proved he is the premier player in HBCU football with a stellar performance in Saturday’s 38-34 win over Alabama State.

In a game with stakes that would decide the SWAC East championship, a possible shot at the Celebration Bowl, and the Deacon Jones trophy, Morgan rose to the occasion in the clutch.

Morgan threw for five touchdowns—including the game-winning 18-yard strike to Nate Rembert with just 50 seconds left—rallied his team in the clutch, and delivered a statement worthy of his growing reputation as the top QB in Black College football.

Engineering a signature moment

Morgan entered the high-stakes showdown as a reigning Celebration Bowl MVP and preseason SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, but Saturday’s win solidified his status as HBCU football’s most reliable playmaker.

He was clinical under pressure, finishing 16-of-23 for 191 yards while connecting with six different receivers and orchestrating touchdown drives every time Jackson State entered the red zone.

With the Tigers trailing late after an Alabama State surge, Morgan embodied poise—calmly leading a decisive 68-yard drive crowned by the go-ahead touchdown. His ability to rise to the occasion, exploit the Hornets’ secondary, and manage the clock showed both leadership and elite skill.

Taylor had just called a timeout with 54 seconds on the clock ahead of a second-and-8 play from the Hornets’ 18-yard line with the Tigers down by three points.

“Coach, I’ve got a play,” Taylor said about Morgan before the game-winning connection. “He made the call that threw the touchdown to Nate. That’s what leaders do.”

Morgan has been dialed in

Since sustaining an injury against Southern Mississippi on Sept. 6, which forced him to miss the Tigers’ next outing against Tuskegee, Morgan has almost mastered the position.

He has thrown 11 touchdown passes against just two interceptions and topped at least 190 passing yards in each of his last three games, including a season-high 337 yards against Southern.

Morgan’s credentials were tested on the final series after Jackson State surrendered a late lead. Yet, as he has in past championship moments, the junior QB delivered—moving the Tigers downfield and threading the winning pass to Rembert, lifting his squad to a 5-1 record and sole possession of first place in the SWAC East.

Alabama State nearly snatched victory back, but Morgan’s earlier red-zone efficiency (five scores in five attempts) was the difference. Even as the Tigers’ defense needed a final stand, Morgan’s leadership set the stage for that chance, protecting the ball and keeping the offense confident.

What Morgan’s performance symbolizes

Morgan’s outing was more than a gaudy stat line—it was a showcase of composure, athleticism, and clutch decision-making the likes of which define the best in HBCU football. He has now outdueled another top quarterback in Andrew Body, extended Jackson State’s home winning streak, and demonstrated he is the standard by which other HBCU quarterbacks are measured.

For Morgan, Saturday wasn’t just a win—it was evidence he has taken the mantle as the singular player at the forefront of HBCU football’s golden era. With the Tigers eyeing another Celebration Bowl berth, all roads to an HBCU national title now run through No.15, who was wearing both his SWAC championship and national title rings in the postgame media session.

“We still have games ahead of us,” Morgan said. “But we are ring chasing.”
