Alcorn State’s homecoming football game is still scheduled for now, despite previous uncertainty about whether its opponent would participate.

Speaking to reporters this week, Braves head coach Cedric Thomas said he was assured by school officials at Lincoln University-California that the Oakland-based team would be in Lorman for Saturday’s game.

“As of this (Monday) morning, everything’s on schedule — they’re set to arrive Friday and be here Saturday for the game,” Thomas said. “Our administration has done a really good job making sure there’s always a backup plan in place.”

The scheduling was addressed amid Lincoln University canceling its Sept. 25 game against Davenport University less than a week after it lost 90-0 to Idaho. The Oaklanders Oct. 4 game versus West Alabama was listed as postponed, according to the team schedule.

While acknowledging the uncertainty, Thomas maintained that his team’s focus remains on preparation, no matter who takes the field on game day.

“Like I told the guys, it could be Lincoln, Tesla, Mercury, Camry — whoever. Somebody’s going to show up and play,” Thomas added. “We’re getting an opportunity to compete on Saturday, and that’s what matters most.”

The kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, with final travel confirmations expected by Friday evening. Alcorn State is 0-5 on the season.

What to know about Lincoln University

The Braves should be favored to beat the Oaklanders, who haven’t won a game since 2022, a 20-17 victory against Division II Bluefield State.

This season alone, Lincoln University, a college football independent, has lost all four of its games by margins of 26 points (34-8), 48 points (60-12), and 49 points (55-6). The university is not recognized by the NCAA, NAIA, or any other football conference or division; however, it is considered a “countable opponent” under NCAA rules.

Alongside their struggles on the field, the program has faced persistent controversy. In 2024, a USA Today investigation reported disturbing allegations about Lincoln University football, including players living in overcrowded housing owned by their coach, working several jobs just to afford rent, relying on food stamps, and dealing with poor athletic facilities and equipment.

The report noted that Desmond Gumbs, the head football coach and athletic director, denied the claims.

Lincoln University is also expected to play at Mississippi Valley State (Oct. 18) and Prairie View A&M (Oct. 25).
