A fatal shooting on the campus of South Carolina State University late Saturday night has left one student dead and another person injured.
University officials confirmed that officers from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and campus police responded to reports of gunfire near the university’s student housing complex shortly after 11 p.m.
According to authorities, the victim, whose name has not yet been released pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured individual was transported to the Regional Medical Center in stable condition.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots during what appeared to be a confrontation near a parking area. Police have not identified any suspects, though investigators said they are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing potential witnesses to determine what led to the violence.
South Carolina State University President Alexander Conyers expressed sorrow over the loss, calling the incident “a heartbreaking tragedy” in a statement released early Sunday. “Our campus community is devastated,” Conyers said. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that our students are safe and that justice is served.”
The university temporarily locked down the campus as officers secured the area, lifting the alert around 2 a.m. Sunday. Classes and campus events scheduled for the day were canceled, and grief counselors have been made available to students.
