Southern University has a rich college baseball tradition.

Though the program has never played in or won the College World Series, the Jaguars have produced Major League Baseball players and a Hall of Fame coach.

One was identified as a candidate for a spot on a list that recognizes the best college players of the last 25 years.

Rickie Weeks, a star baseball player at Southern who played for over a decade in the major leagues, was nominated on D1 Baseball’s All-Quarter Century Team.

While at Southern, Weeks made history in 2003 when he became the first player from an HBCU to win the Golden Spikes Award, given to the best player in the nation. He was also elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023.

Weeks played 11 of his 14 seasons in MLB with the Milwaukee Brewers after being selected No. 2 overall in the 2003 MLB Draft, the highest-ever position an HBCU baseball player has been taken.

Weeks, the only HBCU player considered, was nominated in the second baseman category in the D1 Baseball fan vote, along with Travis Bazzana, Tony Kemp, and Nick Madrigal.

Voting for the quarter-century team ends on Friday, Sept. 26, at 11:59 p.m. ET. You can vote here.
