Grambling State and Prairie View are riding into the State Fair Classic riding high on confidence.

Prairie View, under first-year coach Tremaine Jackson, has retooled and is looking to be a contender in the SWAC West.

Grambling State (3-1) comes off back-to-back come-from-behind wins and is led by quarterback C’Zavian Teasett, a true dual threat with 665 yards, six passing touchdowns, and three more scores on the ground this season.

“So far, I can’t find a weak spot,” Jackson said of Grambling. “That presents a lot of challenges for us.” The Tigers’ offensive line has proven physical in the trenches, and their defense specializes in plugging gaps and controlling the run.

Conversely, Grambling State is raring for another test.

The Panthers bring their weapons, led by running backs Chase Bingmon and Lamagea McDowell. Bingmon has rushed for 328 yards on 54 carries, while McDowell has put up 118 yards on just 15 attempts. Quarterback Tevin Carter presents a dual threat, having thrown for 327 yards and rushed for 171 more in three games.

“We know you got two of the top dogs playing Saturday night in Dallas with two coaches that’s got a reputation of getting their kids ready to play no matter what happens or what goes on outside,” said Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph during this week’s press conference.

“I’m so excited to play against my good frat brother [Jackson] because I know he’ll be competitive. I know he’s going to say some things to try to get under my skin, but he already knows.”

Though both coaches are entirely focused on Saturday night’s game, there’s a mutual appreciation for the gravity of the 100th State Fair Classic. “We want to make sure when the grass gets cut in August that you’re thinking about Prairie View A&M, too,” Jackson said. “And it starts with games like this.”

State Fair Classic Players to Watch

  • C’Zavian Teasett (Grambling State quarterback)
Teasett is Grambling’s key offensive weapon. His impressive dual-threat ability is highlighted by 665 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, and 114 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. His leadership and dynamic playmaking set the tone for the Tigers’ offense, making him a player everyone must watch closely.
  • Chase Bingmon (Prairie View A&M running back)
Bingmon is the cornerstone of Prairie View’s ground game, carrying the ball 54 times for 328 yards. His consistently gaining tough yards and controlling the game’s pace make him critical in sustaining drives and keeping the Grambling defense off balance.
  • Tevin Carter (Prairie View A&M quarterback)
Carter’s dual-threat capabilities—he has passed for 327 yards and rushed for 171 yards this season—add versatility and unpredictability to Prairie View’s offense. His performance under pressure and ability to extend plays will be pivotal in a tightly contested game.
