A group of right-wing provocateurs were swiftly removed from Tennessee State University’s campus in Nashville after attempting to spark debate and promote inflammatory rhetoric.

Wearing “Make America Great Again” hats and carrying signs with slogans such as “DEI should be illegal” and “Deport All Illegals Now,” the group, identifying themselves as “Fearless Debaters,” set up on campus without authorization and began engaging students in heated conversations.

Tennessee State officials confirmed that the demonstrators were not affiliated with the university and did not have the required permits for protest activity. As soon as their presence was reported, campus police and staff intervened, escorting the group off school grounds without physical incident. The university praised TSU students for maintaining professionalism and composure during the disruption, which took place at approximately 3 p.m.

Today @FearlessDebates tour tabled at an HBCU, Tennessee State University and after 10 minutes a literal riot erupted.

They stole our stuff, followed us to our car, attacked the car, shouted “BLACK POWER” and blocked our exit of the campus.

In a statement, TSU reiterated its commitment to campus safety:

“The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority. TSU will continue to uphold university policies and ensure that campus remains a safe, welcoming, and orderly environment for all members of our community.” The Student Government Association also issued a message condemning the group’s actions, pledging to work with administration and public officials to ensure all students feel safe and respected.

The Nashville chapter of the NAACP criticized the group’s actions, calling them an intentional effort to antagonize and instill fear at a historically Black institution. The incident comes amid national concerns about rising tensions and outside groups targeting HBCUs with inflammatory rhetoric. University leaders used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of new campus security enhancements, which include expanded patrols and upgraded surveillance—a response they say was validated by the quick and orderly resolution.

No injuries or arrests were reported as a result of the demonstration, and university officials thanked the TSU community for responding with unity and restraint
