No ‘motivation’ needed for Quinn Gray ahead of Florida A&M matchup

Quinn Gray, once the face of FAMU football and record-shattering brilliance at Bragg Memorial Stadium, makes a bittersweet return this Saturday.

He will not be clad in orange and green but calling plays against his alma mater as Albany State’s head coach.

Gray’s name reverberates through Florida A&M history. Between 1998 and 2001, he led the Rattlers to consecutive MEAC titles and playoff runs, setting program marks for passing yards (7,378), completions (562), and touchdowns (57), before seeing his records eclipsed only years later.

After a pro career with the Jacksonville Jaguars and stints in NFL Europe, Gray turned to coaching, first at high schools and later returning as an assistant to his alma mater. In December 2022, Albany State tapped Gray to run its program.

“I don’t think I have to motivate the guys this week. The motivation is on the schedule,” Gray said on Albany State’s weekly coaches show on Monday.

Gray quickly made his mark at Albany State, delivering back-to-back winning seasons, SIAC Classic sweeps, and leading the conference in scoring offense. The program under Gray has thrived not only on the field but also in academics, with rising GPAs and graduation rates.

This season, two defensive linemen—his own sons—have joined the roster, intensifying the personal stakes as Gray takes his new team to face the school where his legend began.

A matchup charged with meaning

“It’s really a tremendous opportunity for us at Albany State to come down and play a good football team. We’re really trying to make sure we understand the magnitude of it. We’re going down to win a ballgame,” Gray said this week, downplaying the narrative but sharpening his team’s focus on competition.

The Golden Rams, energized behind quarterback Isaiah Knowles, see the chance to topple a Division I opponent as a signature moment for both program and coach.

Meanwhile, FAMU head coach James Colzie III made clear this week of his respect for Gray’s squad amid the Rattlers’ search for their first victory of the season.

“We hold all opponents in high regard, especially teams like Coach Gray’s. We cannot afford to underestimate them. Returning home is an opportunity for us, but Albany State is determined to win this game,” Colzie said.
