Norfolk State head coach Michael Vick has officially named senior Otto Kuhns the starting quarterback for Saturday’s road clash against Rutgers.
Vick, in his first year leading the program, turned to Kuhns after a gutsy fourth-quarter performance in last week’s overtime win over Virginia State. Kuhns completed 13 of 20 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, rallying NSU from behind and helping set up the game-winning field goal.
“Otto has earned this opportunity,” Vick said in a news conference. “He showed tremendous leadership under pressure and gave our offense the steadying presence we needed in critical moments. That’s why he’ll be leading us out at Rutgers.”
Kuhns came to Norfolk State after starting his career at Eastern Illinois and has developed into one of the MEAC’s most experienced quarterbacks. Last season, he threw for 1,244 yards and 12 touchdowns, adding over 260 rushing yards and three scores on the ground.
His familiarity with the offense and composure under fire made him the clear choice for Vick as the team gears up for the season’s first road game and FBS opponent.
“I trust Otto in those big-game environments,” Vick said. “He sets the tone in the huddle, keeps our guys focused, and, given his experience, gives us the best chance to compete on Saturday.”
Norfolk State will be chasing its first-ever win over an FBS opponent when it faces Rutgers, which comes in unbeaten and riding a six-game streak of scoring at least 30 points.
