ATLANTA — ESPN Events announced Monday that revised Nielsen ratings show more than one million viewers tuned in to the 2025 Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta.
North Carolina Central’s 31-14 win over Southern University on August 23 was initially reported at 866,960 viewers. Updated figures now place the live audience at 1,092,151 across ABC and ESPN streaming platforms, including ESPN Deportes.
The change reflects Nielsen’s new Big Data + Panel measurement system, which went into effect September 1 and was retroactively applied to Week Zero and Week One college football games.
How It Works
- Panel Data: Nielsen’s traditional panel of about 42,000 households continues to provide demographic depth.
- Big Data Sources: Data from cable and satellite set-top boxes and smart TVs expand coverage to more than 45 million households and 75 million devices.
- Hybrid Approach: Panel demographics are layered onto large-scale datasets, creating a more accurate and balanced audience picture.
Why It Matters
- Stability: Reduces “zero-rating” gaps, especially in live sports.
- Cross-Platform Insight: Measures both linear and streaming audiences.
- Accuracy: Provides a fuller view of modern viewing habits.
- Industry Standard: The Big Data + Panel system is now the official ratings currency for media buying and programming decisions.
“By incorporating Big Data with our longstanding panel, we’re able to capture a broader and more representative picture of audiences,” Nielsen noted in its rollout announcement. “This ensures networks, advertisers, and content creators have a more reliable tool for planning and decision-making.”
