Ben Vinson III, the 18th president of Howard University, will step down at the end of the month, ending a tenure that began in 2023.

The university officially announced Vinson’s departure on August 22, 2025, just days after the start of the new academic year.

Vinson’s last day as president will be August 31, 2025, according to the school.

The university’s Board of Trustees named former president Wayne A.I. Frederick as the interim leader effective September 1, while the university begins the search for a permanent successor. Frederick previously served as Howard’s 17th president from 2014 to 2023.

In a statement shared with the university community, Vinson reflected on his time leading Howard University. He emphasized his focus on advancing a strategic vision centered on artificial intelligence, data science, and global engagement, particularly emphasizing the importance of diasporic connections.

Vinson expressed gratitude for the support from the Board, faculty, staff, students, and partners during his tenure. He cited his desire to spend more time with family and to continue his research and academic activities as reasons for stepping down.

“My foremost priority has always been the well-being and success of this community, and I remain committed to ensuring a smooth and constructive transition,” Vinson said.

Board Chair Leslie D. Hale underscored the institution’s commitment to maintaining Howard’s mission of excellence and service during this period of transition. Hale praised Vinson’s leadership and conveyed best wishes for his future. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners will be involved in the process leading to the appointment of the next president.

Notably, Vinson’s roughly two-year tenure is the shortest of any Howard University president since Edward Parmelee Smith, who served for six months in the late 19th century.

Founded in 1867, Howard University is one of the nation’s most prestigious historically Black universities, known for its rich history of producing influential leaders across multiple fields.

The leadership transition comes at a critical time as the university continues to advance its academic programs and community impact.

The Board of Trustees and university leadership have pledged to continue fostering a vibrant, welcoming, and innovative environment where students can succeed amidst the leadership change.
