Delaware State University President Dr. Tony Allen is facing charges following his arrest for driving under the influence, marking a striking moment in his tenure at one of the nation’s top Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
According to court records obtained by WBOC, Dr. Allen, 55, was pulled over around 12:30 a.m. on July 21, 2025, while driving his 2025 Rivian electric SUV on Route 1 near Smyrna. Police reported that Allen’s blood alcohol content registered at 0.128%—significantly above Delaware’s legal limit of 0.08%.
In addition to DUI, Allen was charged with failing to remain in a single lane. He was released on his own recognizance, and formal charges were filed in Delaware’s Court of Common Pleas on August 12.
Dr. Allen, who has led Delaware State University since 2020, issued a statement to the DSU community accepting responsibility:
“I was wrong, and I am sorry. I am both regretful and grateful: regretful that we cannot always be our best selves, and grateful that we are given the chance to try again,” Allen wrote.
The university’s Board of Trustees is monitoring the situation closely. Board Chairman Leroy Tice emphasized continued dedication to the school’s mission, stating, “Our responsibility is to ensure Delaware State continues to deliver on its promise of academic excellence and student support. That focus does not change”.
Under Allen’s stewardship, Delaware State has experienced significant growth, including the acquisition of Wesley College and an improvement in national rankings. However, this incident casts a shadow over a period of positive momentum.
Dr. Allen’s arraignment is scheduled for September 11, 2025. University officials have declined to comment further, citing the ongoing legal process.
