On the second day of the US Outdoor Track and Field Championships, a former HBCU sprinter put forth a strong performance in the women’s 100-meter dash final.
Former North Carolina A&T athlete Kayla White clocked in a personal-best time of 10.84 seconds in the finals of the women’s 100m, finishing second behind Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, who posted a world-leading time of 10.65 seconds.
White’s time is an improvement on her previous personal-best time of 10.89 seconds from the first round of the US Championships.
Sha’Carri Richardson, the reigning world champion in the 100m, finished behind White in that first-round race with a season-best 11.07 seconds.
In addition, this marks the third time in White’s career that she has run under 11 seconds in the 100m (not including her wind-aided 10.98 from the 2020 US Olympic Trials).
The former Aggie returned to the track in April after missing the entire 2024 season due to injury.
This will be White’s second World Championship appearance and her first as part of the women’s 100m field (competed in the women’s 200m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships).
However, White’s time in the US Championships is not yet done, as she will also participate in the women’s 200m event on the final day of competition this Sunday.
