The Dallas Cowboys have bolstered their defensive front by signing former Jackson State standout James Houston, according to multiple reports.

Houston, 26, joins the Cowboys after a whirlwind 2024 season that saw him split time between the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns.

From Jackson State to the NFL

Houston rose to national prominence as a defensive force at Jackson State under the guidance of head coach Deion Sanders. During his lone season with the Tigers in 2021, Houston dominated with 70 tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, and an interception, earning first-team All-SWAC and FCS All-American honors.

Originally a Florida Gator, Houston transferred to Jackson State, where a position change to edge rusher unleashed his playmaking potential.

NFL Journey and Recent Moves

Houston entered the NFL as the Detroit Lions’ sixth-round pick in the 2022 draft. After starting on the practice squad, he exploded onto the scene as a rookie with eight sacks in just seven games, including a memorable debut on Thanksgiving Day. However, injuries—including a fractured ankle in 2023—hindered his follow-up campaigns. In 2024, he appeared in eight games with Detroit before being waived, recording just one sack for the season.

The Cleveland Browns claimed Houston off waivers in late November, allowing him three more regular-season appearances, but they chose not to extend him a new contract. The Cowboys, searching for depth and options on the defensive edge, signed Houston as training camp opened, hoping he can recapture the spark he showed as a rookie.

What Houston Brings to Dallas

Houston joins a Cowboys defensive line featuring Micah Parsons and a strong rotation of pass rushers. Given his history of explosiveness and versatility, Dallas hopes Houston can provide much-needed pressure in a division stacked with offensive firepower.
