James Colzie was asked about Angela Suggs. Here’s what he said about the embattled AD

As Florida A&M enters its second football season under coach James Colzie, questions continue to swirl around the status of athletic director Angela Suggs.

Despite Suggs, who has been on administrative leave since she was accused of charging over $23,000 to her Florida Sports Foundation business credit card at various casinos between 2022 and 2024 while she was employed there, Colzie emphasized her steadfast support for the program..

At SWAC Media Day on Wednesday, Colzie was asked how Suggs’ absence could impact the football team.

“I know she supports us fully as far as what we’re trying to get ready to get done,” Colzie said. “I’m not in a position where I am and as comfortable as I am with what—as we are, you know, going into the season, or getting ready for the season—without AD Suggs’ help.”

Colzie noted Suggs’ consistent efforts to ensure the student-athletes and coaching staff are set up for success.

“She’s worked diligently for us. I know right now, as I mentioned, she’s on leave, but at the end of the day, I know she fully supports what we’re doing,” he added.

While Colzie admitted he would “love for her to be here,” he stressed that the team’s focus remains on controlling what they can inside their own locker room.

That also includes not allowing the school’s very public and controversial appointment of Marva Johnson as university president to distract them from preparing for the 2025 season.

“Some of the stuff that has been going on with our campus has brought our team a lot tighter,” Colzie said. “We could only worry about the things that are in our locker room, and that’s how we go about it every single day.”
