A rising HBCU basketball program plans to keep its coach around for the long haul.
Delaware State announced that men’s basketball coach Stan Waterman has signed a contract extension through the 2027-28 season.
“I want to thank President Allen, Athletic Director Tony Tucker, Executive Vice President, Dr. Irene Hawkins, The Board of Trustees and the entire athletic administration for believing in the vision we have for the program athletically, academically, socially, and spiritually,” Waterman said in a statement. “I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to lead the basketball program here at Delaware State University. I’m excited by the possibilities. We have made tremendous strides in transforming the program over the past four years and look forward to continued improvement.”
Waterman won over 500 games and eight boys’ basketball state championships at Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware, before taking over the Hornets prior to the 2021-22 season. After two wins the first year, DSU has improved steadily, making a MEAC championship game appearance in 2024. Last season was the program’s first winning record since 2011-12.
