In a historic moment for both Jackson State University and HBCU baseball, former Tigers pitcher Earl Sanders has been elected to the 2025 class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
The announcement, made Monday by the College Baseball Foundation, places Sanders among 21 inductees who have left an indelible mark on the collegiate game.
Sanders, a dominant force at Jackson State from 1984 to 1986, is celebrated as one of the most accomplished players in HBCU baseball history. During his three-year collegiate career, he earned both Southwestern Athletic Conference Hitter of the Year and Pitcher of the Year honors—a rare double that underscored his all-around talent.
In his final season, Sanders led the Tigers to a SWAC championship and an NCAA Regional appearance at LSU, posting a remarkable .432 batting average, 17 home runs, and 60 RBIs.
His stellar performance caught the attention of Major League scouts, and the Toronto Blue Jays selected him in the first round of the 1986 MLB Draft. Sanders’ legacy at Jackson State is further cemented as he becomes only the second representative from the university to enter the Hall of Fame, joining his former coach Robert Braddy, who was inducted in 2016.
Reflecting on the significance of this year’s induction class, College Baseball Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman Craig Ramsey said, “Their achievements show the growth and diversity of the game, including the important role of HBCU baseball”.
Now in his second stint as head baseball coach at Tougaloo College, another Mississippi HBCU, Sanders continues to shape the next generation of student-athletes. His leadership and commitment to the sport have made him a respected figure both on and off the field.
The 18th College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony, known as the Night of Champions, will be held on February 12, 2026, in Overland Park, Kansas, serving as the ceremonial start of the college baseball season
