Following the departure of former women’s basketball coach Tierra Terry, who was hired to take over a similar role at Winston-Salem State, the Virginia Union Panthers have announced her successor.
Longtime HBCU basketball coach Alico Dunk becomes the 10th head coach in the history of the Virginia Union women’s basketball program.
A former student-athlete at the University of Tennessee and East Carolina, Dunk began coaching in 2003 as an assistant on the Elizabeth City State men’s basketball team.
He spent six years in this role, helping lead the Vikings to their most recent CIAA tournament title in 2007 before being hired as the school’s women’s basketball coach.
Dunk served in this role for five seasons, leading the Lady Vikings to an 83-56 overall record and two division titles. In 2013, he was named CIAA Coach of the Year after posting a program-best 24-5 overall record.
The East Carolina alum then took over as ECSU’s men’s basketball coach before accepting the women’s basketball coach role at Stillman.
In his eight seasons as Stillman’s women’s basketball coach, Dunk posted a 122-106 overall record, including five seasons finishing with a record above .500.
The 2025 season was the most successful, catapulting the Lady Tigers to a 26-6 overall record and a berth in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Stillman continued to make history, notching its first win in a NAIA National Tournament contest, following an 83-79 first-round victory over Rio Grande.
Virginia Union finished the 2025 on wi-9 overall record, marking its first 20-win season since 2020.
The Panthers have recorded consecutive winning seasons after snapping their first streak of consecutive losing seasons in a decade.
