The Texas Southern men’s track and field team has begun reloading.

Louisiana High School state champion Josh Brown will join the squad for the 2025-26 season.

A native of New Orleans, Brown will graduate from Holy Cross High School after a successful high school career. Brown currently ranks fourth nationally in the 200 and holds the top time in the 100 and 200-meter dashes in the state of Louisiana. His 4×100-meter relay team also posted the top time in the state this past season.

“I’m very honored and pleased that we were able to sign this young man,” said head coach Clyde Duncan, Sr “Without a doubt, he’ll have a big impact for us immediately.”

A state champion in both indoor and outdoor track, Brown recently won the 100 and 200-meter championships while also anchoring the 4×100-meter relay gold medal-winning squad at the LHSAA Class 5A state meet. Brown was also the 2024 LHSAA State Champion in the 100 and 200. During the past indoor season, Brown also claimed a gold medal in the 60-meter dash.

Brown rewrote the Holy Cross record book in multiple races and is also an accomplished football player who earned all-state and all-district honors. While his accolades on the field excite Duncan, Sr., Brown’s work in the classroom and his desire to improve were the icing on the cake, with a strong GPA.

“He is a straight-A student and a very mature young man,” he said. “I don’t anticipate him having much of an adjustment here in terms of getting ready to work and produce. What’s amazing is that he hasn’t run track for very long, so the sky’s the limit for him.”

With a strong resume in two sports, it wasn’t a surprise that Brown would generate considerable interest from schools across the country. Duncan utilized the string bond of the Texas Southern track and field family during the recruitment process, as former Flying T standout Eric Smith, a successful high school coach in Louisiana, played a hand in Brown’s recruitment.

Duncan, who became the first men’s track & field head coach in the SWAC in 20-plus years to win the trifecta (indoor/outdoor/cross country) in back-to-back seasons, will attempt to capture more history once the cross country season kicks off in August.
