Dawson Odums, the former head coach at Norfolk State and Southern University, has been selected to join the Jacksonville Jaguars as part of the prestigious NFL Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship program.
The Jaguars announced Odums’ appointment alongside two other fellows, Ari Confesor and Anthony Gaitor, as part of their offseason coaching staff additions.
Odums, who most recently led Norfolk State’s football program from 2021 to 2024, will participate in the Jaguars’ offseason activities, including organized team activities and minicamp throughout May and June.
The Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship is designed to provide promising coaches from diverse backgrounds the chance to gain hands-on NFL experience, aiming to prepare them for full-time coaching roles in the league.
During his tenure at Norfolk State, Odums guided the Spartans to their first winning season since 2007 and helped six players earn All-MEAC honors in 2023.
Prior to Norfolk State, Odums enjoyed a highly successful run at Southern University, where he compiled a 63-35 record, captured a SWAC championship in 2013, and was named SWAC Coach of the Year. His teams consistently ranked among the best in the conference, excelling on both sides of the ball and producing several players who advanced to the NFL and CFL.
About the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship
Named after Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh, the fellowship aims to increase diversity in NFL coaching ranks by giving talented coaches exposure to the league’s training camps, offseason programs, and minicamps.
The experience allows fellows to observe, participate, and develop their skills in an NFL environment, often serving as a springboard to full-time coaching opportunities.
